With more than 12 years experience in starting and financing emerging growth companies (including NASDAQ: TWER), Paul has spent the last five years focusing on the cannabis space.
Consulting with a variety of industry players, including Canada’s first licensed producer, Canada’s largest extraction/processor, and Canada’s leading seed-to-sale software provider has given Paul in-depth industry knowledge. Coupled with his business acumen, Paul provides a unique perspective in this field, making him a sought-after expert and regular feature within trade publications such as Marijuana Business Daily and Lift & co.

Through an 15+ year career in the cannabis industry, Ryan has developed deep expertise and intellectual property within extraction technology, leading to Canada’s first processing patent for cannabis extraction and distillation. Consumables and concentrates produced through the process Ryan pioneered, have been acknowledged through the Canadian Cannabis Awards, and are highly sought after by cultivators and consumers nation wide.
Born and raised in Canada’s West Coast cannabis heartland, Ryan is experienced in financing and advising cannabis start-ups who have in-turn become industry leaders. Today, Ryan’s passion lies in identifying turn-key solutions for cultivators, allowing them to scale-up and maximize revenue with ease.
CHARLES ACKERMAN, CPA, CA
CFO & DIRECTOR
Charles is a CPA, CA with extensive experience in corporate finance and financial reporting for high growth companies. Charles has successfully lead mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and private and public capital raises. He has served in a number of finance and corporate leadership roles developing and executing growth strategies, with private and public companies and family offices across Canada.
Dr Paul MacLeman has over 25 years of board and executive experience across life sciences and, agricultural sectors; encompassing technical, commercial and financial areas. He chairs the committee reviewing the National Vocational Education Training Package in Pharmaceuticals.

IVAN CASSELMAN, PHD, FLS
DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Dr. Ivan Casselman is an ethnobotanist, analytical phytochemist, and plant geneticist, with over 15 years’ experience working in the cannabis industry on a global scale.
His experience in the development of herbal formulations, authentication, and quality control gives him unique insight into the development of cannabis infused products across a wide variety of commercial applications.
A regular speaker at industry events such as MJBiz, and contributor to publications such as the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Dr. Casselman’s expertise is sought out for his ability to effortlessly combine both the integrity of science and the practicality of business.
Over the last decade, Dr. Casselman has been involved in the start-up, growth and expansion of several plant medicine and retail companies throughout Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Responsibilities included franchise expansion, sales operations, and implementation of a scalable corporate strategy.
Dr. Casselman is a third-generation cannabis industry pioneer and advocate. He lives in Vancouver BC with his wife, an Osteopath, who he met while completing his PhD in Australia.
KRUPAL PAL, PhD, P.Eng
LEAD PROCESS ENGINEER
As a process engineer since 2005, Dr. Pal has worked applying fundamental chemical engineering and applied scientific principles to problems in many diverse fields, including extraction technology for oilsands operations, biodiesel processing and the petrochemical industry. Before joining Nextleaf in December 2017, Dr. Pal focused her career on process scale-up and process development in industrial research and development.
ALEXZANDER SAMUELSSON, BSC
Alexzander has three years experience in the cannabis industry, consulting for various companies ranging from start-up to large scale. With a degree in chemistry, he has focused his background on innovation, research and education in the Medical Cannabis industry. Alexzander joined Nextleaf in October 2017.
Emma Andrews, BA, NPDP, RHN
DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
Emma is a dynamic leader with proven expertise in building global lifestyle brands. She combines her passion for education, innovation, health sciences and marketing to deliver an “anything but average” approach to building world-class programs, products, and experiences. Most recently, Emma was a Partner, and Co-Founder of a multi-national strategic consulting company.
Through 10+ years working across the natural products, sport nutrition, and cannabis industries, Emma’s led the development of renowned education and experiential marketing programs within retail, CPG, and non-profit sectors; planned and facilitated hundreds of events for participants across North America; launched and reformulated SKU’s earning multi-million dollars in revenue across a variety of distribution channels including online, and retail.

Taran’s successfully tripled the size of the patent and trademark portfolios for firms he’s worked with, while reducing the aggregate total IP expenses incurred. Taran has managed IP protection at major international tech companies.
Stephanie Martens, HBA, PgCert
EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT, MARKETING & EVENTS COORDINATOR
Stephanie is known for her passion and dedication to the cannabis industry, and the connections she’s made within it. She brings to the Nextleaf team over 10 years in hospitality management. She’s been a GM for a team of 60+, and gained franchise wide recognition for her location’s performance results. Steph’s incredibly organized, and honed both her analytical and communication skills through a psychology degree from Concordia, and a post-graduate certification in Public Relations.
Adel Fares, BBA
OPERATIONS, CORPORATE ADMIN & FINANCE
Adel is an integral contributor to Nextleaf’s operational excellence. He handles logistics and client enquiries for centralized and mobile extraction services, is a core liaison in financing initiatives, and represents the company in business development opportunities.
Adel is an accomplished academic, having made both the Dean’s List and President’s list at Mount Royal University, where he completed his BBA in Finance and Business Management. He’s inspired by the disruptive nature of the cannabis industry.
