Ryanair secures Citi 'buy' rating as smaller airlines face winter capacity squeeze

Ryanair Holdings PLC (LSE:RYA) represents an appealing vehicle for navigating a challenging winter backdrop, with growth set to accelerate across its core markets, alongside Wizz Air Holdings PLC (AIM:WIZZ).

Wizz Air shares slipped to 1,116p, down 0.53%, as Citi flagged rising capacity rationalisation risks while highlighting the Irish carrier's remarkably robust balance sheet and operational resilience.

At the heart of the update is a modest reduction in planned late-summer schedules, which analysts expect will rapidly pivot to accelerated winter operations across both airlines.

That incremental capacity is largely being driven by smaller peripheral carriers outside the top ten competitors, rather than being concentrated purely within the established ultra-low-cost airline pack.

Those smaller operators, however, are now viewed as the most probable source of capacity retrenchment should jet fuel expenses remain elevated over the intensely competitive coming six months.

On the same note, Citi warned that current flight schedules point to a demanding winter environment, as persistent fuel headwinds will inevitably accelerate the ongoing rationalisation of regional supply.

Such industry retrenchment is projected to steadily increase overall market concentration, leaving the most financially resilient operators well positioned to capitalise on shifting dynamics into the next financial year.

That dynamic underpins the broker's constructive stance on Ryanair, reflecting strong confidence in the group's ability to absorb sector pressures, with its balance-sheet advantages reflected in the numbers.

Crucially, the broader sector trajectory hinges on whether stubbornly high jet fuel costs persist long enough to force weaker peripheral rivals to make substantial capacity cuts over the coming winter.
