In early morning trading, WH Smith shares topped the FTSE 250 leader board, up over 3.5%, or 62p at 1,683p.
“An upgrade in the Travel Division is very unusual to start with,”said Haitong.
The FTSE 250-listed firm said like-for-like sales for its travel business - which includes outlets at airports and railways stations – were up 5% for the 21 weeks to January 21.
In New York, the US blue chip index was up over 150 points to 20,064, the first time it has exceeded the psychologically significant 20,000 level in intraday trading.
