WH Smith boosted by Zoella book club sales

Sales were boosted by the success of the Zoella book club established in June, the firm revealed

In an increasingly online world, it's perhaps comforting that book sales and stationery were a driving force behind a 5% rise in High Street trading profits for WH Smith plc (LON:SMWH) in full year results.

Sales were boosted by the success of the Zoella book club established in June, where video blogger Zoe Sugg suggested eight titles to buy.

Smith's shares added almost 3% in early deals to stand at 1,570p a pop after it released its prelims.

Overall, group pre-tax profit was up 8% to £131mln on total revenue, which was up 3% at £1.2bn and like-for-like, up 1%.

The board also plans a 12% increase in the final dividend and announced a further share buyback of up to £50mln, reflecting, it said, its positive outlook for the future. It comes after it completed a £42mln share buyback announced at around then same time last year.

Stephen Clarke, chief executive, said it had been a good performance across the group with earnings up 10%.

"Our Travel business continues to perform well with strong sales across all channels and profit up 9%.

"We have further extended our food to go ranges and during the year we sold over ten million 'meal deals'. Internationally, we have won a further 32 stores in the year, giving us a total of 232 stores won across 25 countries.
