Critical Resources secures NZ approvals, clears path for expanded gold exploration

Critical Resources Ltd (ASX:CRR, FRA:9S70) has secured final regulatory approvals to consolidate its growing gold-antimony footprint in New Zealand, paving the way for immediate on-ground exploration across a district-scale landholding.

The company confirmed that New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals has approved the transfer of five prospecting permits into its wholly owned subsidiary, Goldfire Resources Ltd, completing acquisitions first announced in 2025.

At the same time, the Department of Conservation (DOC) has granted approval for Minimum Impact Activities across four of the permits, allowing early-stage fieldwork to begin without delay.

The approvals mark a key step in Critical Resources’ push to build a meaningful gold exploration portfolio in New Zealand alongside its existing lithium and battery materials exposure.

Portfolio consolidation unlocks fieldwork

With the transfers complete, Critical Resources now controls a 1,694-square-kilometre land package across six permits in the Otago and Reefton regions — areas known for historic gold and antimony mineralisation.

Managing director Tim Wither described the approvals as a “pivotal milestone,” noting they provide full statutory authority to operate across the company’s New Zealand portfolio.

“The DOC approval to commence Minimum Impact Activities across the Koura permits allows us to get boots on the ground straight away,” he said.

Initial work will focus on geological mapping, rock chip sampling and geochemical surveys aimed at defining drill targets, while planning continues for follow-up drilling at the more advanced Cap Burn project.

That project has already delivered early indications of an orogenic gold system, with first-pass drilling confirming mineralisation and supporting further targeting along the Cap Burn fault corridor.

Multiple targets across established gold belts

The newly consolidated portfolio spans several prospective projects positioned within or adjacent to well-known gold systems.

At Rock and Pillar, the company has secured a large-scale tenement in Central Otago, located along strike from OceanaGold’s Macraes operation and near Santana Minerals’ Bendigo-Ophir discovery. The area is considered underexplored by modern methods despite favourable geology.

Silver Peaks sits immediately south of the Hyde-Macraes shear zone — a key structural control on mineralisation in the region — and includes extensions of historic gold-antimony lodes.

At Lammerlaw, the company is targeting a largely untested structural setting that shares geological similarities with the Macraes system, while Tokomairiro hosts historical production of around 25,700 ounces of gold at grades of up to 25 g/t and has returned high-grade surface samples.

Next phase: Systematic exploration and drilling

With permitting now in place, Critical Resources plans to move quickly into early-stage exploration across the newly acquired ground.

Key priorities include:

  • commencing field programs across the Koura permits
  • advancing permitting and planning at Rock and Pillar
  • progressing drill targeting at Cap Burn
  • engaging with landholders ahead of more advanced work

The company will also continue refining its geological models as new data emerges, feeding into future exploration permit applications and drilling decisions.

The New Zealand expansion adds to Critical Resources’ broader portfolio, which includes the Mavis Lake lithium project in Canada and the Halls Peak base metals project in New South Wales, as it continues to balance exposure across both precious and critical minerals.
