Gelion appoints Matthew Wood as chief executive

Gelion PLC (AIM:GELN, OTC:GELNF, FRA:X0S), the sulfur battery company, has appointed Matthew Wood as chief executive as it shifts from technology development towards commercial scale-up.

He replaces John Wood, who retires from his full-time executive role with immediate effect and steps down from the board after a successful tenure.

Matthew Wood, 44, joins from Cabot Corporation, a Boston-based specialty chemicals company, where he spent 15 years in a series of leadership roles, most recently as senior vice president and president of reinforcement materials.

His career has included postings in Germany, China and the US, and he has held profit-and-loss responsibility for businesses ranging from $10 million to $2 billion in revenue.

Gelion is developing a technology that replaces the critical minerals used in conventional lithium-ion battery cathodes with its nano-encapsulated sulfur material, which it says is low-cost and can be used on existing manufacturing lines.

Chairman Steve Mahon said the appointment was a critical part of the company's transition from technology to industrial relevance, citing Wood's experience in scaling up and selling battery materials.

John Wood will continue to support the company as a senior adviser, assisting with key relationships and partnerships.

The company has delivered partnerships with TDK, QinetiQ and Nissan.
