Coiled Therapeutics recruits oncology heavyweights to advise on lead cancer drug

Coiled Therapeutics (AIM:COIL, OTCQB:COTXF), the clinical-stage oncology company, has appointed two senior cancer drug developers to a newly formed medical advisory board guiding its lead programme, AO-252.

Professor Guru Sonpavde and Dr Alexander Spira join as founding members as the experimental drug advances through early-stage phase I human trials.

Their arrival follows what the company described as encouraging early clinical signals and the recent appointment of Professor Ozgur Sahin as scientific adviser.

AO-252 targets TACC3, a protein linked to cancer cell growth that currently has no validated therapy.

Sonpavde directs genitourinary oncology and phase I clinical research at the AdventHealth Cancer Institute in Florida, having previously led bladder cancer work at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and held a post at Harvard Medical School.

He has co-led landmark trials that resulted in regulatory approvals for new urothelial cancer treatments and has more than 500 peer-reviewed publications.

Spira is chief executive of NEXT Oncology Virginia and co-director of clinical research at Virginia Cancer Specialists, where he runs one of the most active early-phase trial programmes in the United States community oncology setting.

He has contributed to numerous first-in-human and registration-enabling studies across targeted therapies and immuno-oncology, with more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.

The advisers will shape AO-252's clinical strategy, including expansion cohort design, indication selection and combination therapy plans.

Their appointments are structured to accelerate progress from dose escalation into an expansion phase anticipated in the second half of 2026.

Coiled Therapeutics (AIM:COIL, OTCQB:COTXF) is listed on London's AIM market and trades over the counter in the United States.
