Aurum Resources chases West African gold scale with twin Côte d’Ivoire growth strategy

Gold developers chasing scale in emerging mining districts often face a familiar challenge: discoveries large enough to support standalone operations can still struggle to justify the infrastructure, financing and development costs required to become profitable mines.

Aurum Resources Ltd (ASX:AUE) is attempting to solve that problem in West Africa by building something larger — and faster.

In less than three years, the ASX-listed explorer has assembled a 2,500-square-kilometre land package across Côte d’Ivoire, grown its combined gold inventory from zero to 4.2 million ounces and begun positioning its flagship Boundiali Gold Project as the centrepiece of a broader multi-asset production strategy.

Rather than relying on a single discovery, Aurum is pursuing a hub-and-spoke development model anchored around a proposed central processing facility at Boundiali, while simultaneously advancing the nearby Napié project as a second long-term growth asset.

That strategy is unfolding against a backdrop of rising investor interest in Côte d’Ivoire, where major producers including Perseus Mining, Endeavour Mining and Allied Gold have expanded aggressively in recent years as global miners increasingly shift attention towards West Africa’s underexplored Birimian greenstone belts.

Building scale at Boundiali

The centrepiece of Aurum’s growth strategy is the Boundiali Gold Project in northern Côte d’Ivoire, where the company has spent the past two years consolidating what was previously a fragmented district-scale landholding controlled by multiple junior explorers.

Developing a central processing hub at Boundiali

Boundiali now hosts a 3.22-million-ounce gold resource following Aurum’s latest upgrade in May, with Indicated ounces increasing 24% as drilling continues to expand multiple deposits across the broader project area.

The project already spans several emerging gold systems, including the BD, BM and BST tenements, each displaying different styles of mineralisation but collectively supporting Aurum’s vision for a large regional processing hub.

At the BD tenement, Aurum has outlined a 13-kilometre-long gold corridor hosting the BDT1, BDT2 and BDT3 deposits, where mineralisation remains open in all directions.

More Gold Resource Growth at BD tenement

Recent drilling has continued delivering thick, higher-grade intersections beneath and beyond existing resources, including:

  • 83 metres at 4.87 g/t gold from 106 metres;
  • 89 metres at 2.42 g/t from 213 metres; and
  • 12 metres at 22.02 g/t from 145 metres.

Meanwhile, the BM deposits have emerged as another rapidly growing discovery zone, with Aurum highlighting that only about 5 kilometres of a 57-kilometre mineralised shear system has been drill tested so far.

That broader exploration upside is helping underpin the company’s push towards a larger-scale development profile rather than a conventional single-deposit operation.

Development pathway taking shape

Aurum is now moving beyond pure exploration mode at Boundiali, with several key development milestones already under way.

The company is progressing a pre-feasibility study for a centralised carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach processing facility, designed to act as the operational hub for multiple deposits across the district.

Environmental and social impact studies are expected to be completed during 2026, while three mining licence applications are already advancing through the Ivorian approvals process.

Preliminary metallurgical work has also produced encouraging results.

According to Aurum, test work indicates the ore is amenable to conventional gravity and CIL processing, with overall gold recoveries ranging from 95% to 99% at relatively coarse grind sizes.

The company said gravity recovery alone could account for 50% to 60% of gold extraction before leaching, potentially lowering reagent consumption and improving operating efficiency.

Infrastructure is another key part of the investment case.

Boundiali benefits from access to sealed roads, water supply and nearby 225-kilovolt grid power, while the region’s relatively flat terrain is expected to support lower-cost development compared with many remote African gold projects.

Aurum’s drilling advantage

One of the more unusual elements of Aurum’s strategy is that it owns and operates its own diamond drilling fleet rather than outsourcing exploration work to contractors.

The company now controls 14 diamond drill rigs operating across its Côte d’Ivoire projects, giving it an internal drilling capacity exceeding 150,000 metres annually.

Management argues that structure provides a major competitive advantage, particularly during periods when contractor availability tightens across the mining sector.

Aurum estimates its internal drilling costs at roughly US$45 per metre, compared with industry averages closer to US$220 per metre.

That cost advantage has allowed the company to maintain continuous multi-rig drilling campaigns across several deposits simultaneously, accelerating both resource growth and discovery testing.

The results have been dramatic.

Since acquiring the original Boundiali assets in late 2023, Aurum has expanded its combined resource base from zero to 4.2 million ounces across Boundiali and Napié.

Napié becoming the second growth pillar

While Boundiali remains the flagship, Aurum increasingly views the Napié Gold Project as its second major development platform following the company’s takeover of Mako Gold in 2025.

Napié currently hosts a 1.16-million-ounce resource spread across the Tchaga and Gogbala deposits, with more than 93% of the resource sitting within 150 metres of surface.

Napié Gold Project

Importantly, Aurum believes the system remains significantly underexplored.

The current resource occupies only around 4.5 kilometres of strike length along a broader 30-kilometre mineralised corridor, leaving substantial room for additional discoveries.

Recent drilling has continued returning higher-grade results, including:

  • 41 metres at 4.51 g/t gold from 17 metres;
  • 13 metres at 20.82 g/t gold from 32 metres; and
  • 17 metres at 9.38 g/t gold from 236 metres.

Metallurgical test work has also produced average recoveries above 94%, reinforcing management’s view that Napié could eventually integrate into a broader regional development strategy.

Côte d’Ivoire drawing renewed attention

Aurum’s rapid rise also reflects broader changes under way across West African gold exploration.

West Africa - Destination of Choice

Côte d’Ivoire has emerged as one of the region’s fastest-growing gold jurisdictions over the past decade, supported by expanding infrastructure, a relatively stable mining code and growing interest from international producers.

Industry groups increasingly view the country as one of the more attractive destinations for new gold development globally, particularly as established mining regions become harder and more expensive to explore.

Aurum’s management team is also leaning heavily on its previous operational experience in the country.

Several members of the company’s leadership group were involved in the development of the 3.83-million-ounce Abujar gold mine, which was advanced from discovery into production in a comparatively short timeframe.

That operational track record is now becoming central to Aurum’s broader pitch to investors: not simply that it can discover gold, but that it can potentially move projects towards development faster than many peers.

With more than 100,000 metres of drilling underway this year, multiple resource updates expected and pre-feasibility work advancing at Boundiali, Aurum is entering a phase where the market’s focus may increasingly shift from discovery growth alone toward whether the company can translate its expanding resource base into a credible development pathway.
