Week ahead: Pubs, builders, recruiters, Burberry and US banks

Housebuilders Barratt and Vistry, leisure chains JD Wetherspoon, Loungers and Ten Entertainment, recruiters Page and Hays and asset managers Ashmore and Liontrust provide the different thematic strands for the coming week.

For investors who want to try on something different, Burberry is likely to focus on how luxury brand is coping with a slower-than-expected Chinese economic recovery, while data services colossus Experian (LSE:EXPN) should also shed light on how lending conditions in both the UK and US are holding up.

Talking of lending, the week ends with the start of US earnings season proper as big banks Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo report earnings for the second quarter.

In terms of macroeconomic data, key items to watch are UK jobs and GDP on Tuesday and Thursday respectively, and US inflation on Wednesday.

MONDAY 10 JUNE

OnTheMarket gets things going at the start of a week where there will be a focus on the housing market.

With worries about mortgages being a key force in the past year, OnTheMarket recently launched a new offer to help homebuyers with mortgages as part of its new Money division, coming hot on the heels of its new lead generation service for estate agents.

Vistry Group PLC (LSE:VTY) is among a couple of housebuilders expected to report in the coming week.

The update from the owner of Bovis Homes will be eagerly anticipated for its perspective on what's happening in the housing market, with some industry data showing the fastest decline in house prices in 12 years while other figures indicate demand is fairly solid.

A statement on trading is also scheduled from another corner of the construction market, in the form infrastructure specialist Galliford Try PLC.

The year-end update should maintain the positive tone set by the company and the sector, said broker Peel Hunt, noting that since March’s interim results there has been a “procession” of new, positive contract awards, as well as the announcement of a successful contract settlement.

WEDNESDAY 12 JUNE

When JD Wetherspoon PLC (LSE:JDW) (JD Wetherspoon PLC (LSE:JDW)) provides a pre-close trading update on Wednesday 12 July investors will be keen to find out whether any of the soaring costs stunting the industry are abating and plans for pricing.

Shares in the pub group hit a decade low last autumn but in 2023 rallied more than 70% to a 12-month high in May after its upbeat third-quarter update, before staggering back in recent weeks.

It’s a day for leisure companies, with café-bar operator Loungers and ten-pin bowling chain Ten Entertainment also reporting.

Elsewhere, there should be an update from PageGroup PLC (LSE:PAGE) that is likely to echo some of the downbeat assessments of the global recruitment market from rival Robert Walters last week, and comes a day ahead of another sector peer, Hays.

THURSDAY 13 JUNE

Barratt Developments should be the second housebuilder to report this week, following the curious non-appearance of fellow FTSE 100-listed rival Persimmon’s trading update last week.

The Newcastle-based builder will be closely watched for news on how the current mortgage uncertainty is affecting business.

The data services colossus has guided to 4-6% growth for the year, though analysts expect the first quarter to be at the slower end.
