Vistry update eagerly watched (unless it pulls disappearing act like Persimmon)

Vistry Group PLC (LSE:VTY) is among a couple of housebuilders expected to report in the coming week, unless they pull a disappearing act like rival Persimmon did in the past week.

A trading statement was widely expected from Persimmon this past Thursday, with previews from several analysts.

But come Thursday morning it had not appeared and the shares fell more than the rest of the sector as investors seemed to assume things are so bad that the company had pulled the statement

The FTSE 100 group had issued a second-quarter trading update in the same week last year but on checking its financial calendar any trace of a repeat was not apparent, with the results on 10 August the next scheduled release.

Unless Vistry gets similar ideas, its update will be eagerly anticipated, to see its take on what's happening in the housing market.

Recent industry data has been mixed, with Halifax reporting the fastest fall in house prices in 12 years as many consumers get whacked with higher mortgage rates, though demand appears to be fairly solid according to Nationwide.

Shares in the owner of the Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Countryside Partnerships brands are roughly flat for the year to date, which is among the best performances in the sector.

Helping this was a profit upgrade in May by £10mln to £450mln, with management talking at the time of improved market conditions and confidence on cost management.

In the past week, analysts at JPMorgan said an industry softening in sales rates is possible given the uncertainty on interest rates, which casts doubts over the expected volume recovery in 2024 and the outlook for average selling prices.
