JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Citigroup stock soars on positive earnings and more stories from the world of finance

Banxa Holdings Inc said its fiscal 2022 financial results reflect the explosion of transaction volumes amid one of the largest bull markets in crypto to date.

In its results for the 2022 Australian fiscal year ended June 30, 2022, the company said its total transaction volume grew 107% from US$497 million in fiscal 2021 to US$964 million.

JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) head Jamie Dimon’s weather forecast in today’s first-quarter earnings call warned of gathering storm clouds on the horizon of the banking sector, sparking anxieties that the March mini-crisis has yet to fully blow over.

“The storm clouds that we have been monitoring for the past year remain on the horizon, and the banking industry turmoil adds to these risks,” Dimon said told shareholders.

PNC Financial Services (NYSE:PNC) Group Inc shares climbed after the closely watched US regional bank reported first-quarter earnings which beat Wall Street estimates on revenue which jumped 59.9% on a year-over-year basis helped by higher deposits and interest rates.

For the period ended March 31, 2023, the Pittsburg-based bank reported earnings of 1.7 billion, or $3.98 per diluted share on revenue of $7.7 billion. The consensus earnings estimate was $3.60 per diluted share on revenue of $5.6 billion.

BlackRock reported double-digit drops in revenue and adjusted net income during the first quarter, however, its earnings still topped the Street’s expectations, sending the company’s shares higher.

For the three months ended March 31, 2023, the bank posted a 10% decline in revenue. Revenue fell from $4.7 billion in the comparable quarter last year to $4.2 billion, in line with the Street’s expectation.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) has reported first-quarter earnings and revenue that beat consensus estimates, sending its shares more than 4% higher in pre-market trade.

The bank benefited from higher interest rates during the quarter, but that also came with a rise in provisions for credit losses.

JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) has reported record first-quarter revenue as the US’s largest bank by assets continued to generate “considerable amounts of capital”, sending its shares almost 6% higher in Friday pre-market trade.

However, while saying the US economy continues to be on a generally healthy footing, chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon warned that the storm clouds that the bank has been monitoring for the past year remain on the horizon, and the recent banking industry turmoil adds to these risks.

Berkshire Hathaway, owned by Warren Buffett, sold US$1.2bn worth of bonds in the yen currency, according to Bloomberg.

The investment company is one of the largest issuers of yen debt and paid higher costs to sell debt in the currency due to the burden for issuers created by the speculation about the Bank of Japan policy tightening.

Dan Snyder, owner of the National Football League (NFL)’s Washington Commanders, has reached a deal to sell the franchise to Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO) co-founder Josh Harris for $6 billion, a source confirmed to CBS (NYSE:CBS) Sports.

The sale price would set an NFL record, surpassing last year’s previous high of $4.65 billion when the Walton-Penner group purchased the Denver Broncos.

The 14th annual Banking on Climate Chaos report is authored by Rainforest Action Network, BankTrack, Indigenous Environmental Network, Oil Change International, Reclaim Finance, Sierra Club, and Urgewald who are critical of banks’ role in financing fossil fuel operations.

Reuters reported that the US’s largest bank plans to roll out more automated attendance tracking to manage work schedules, real estate and security.

Analysts at Canaccord Genuity (TSX:CF, LSE:CF) have lowered their price target for Tilray Brands after the company announced it is acquiring its strategic partner HEXO for US$56 million in tandem with the release of its fiscal 3Q 2023 results earlier this week.

In a note to clients, the analysts wrote that their updated price target was US$4.25, down from US$5, with a ‘Buy’ rating. Tilray shares were trading down 2.8% at US$2.45 on Wednesday afternoon.

Jes Staley, the former Barclays boss, has been accused of whining by the judge overseeing lawsuits that relate to his relationship with the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Staley launched a bid to separate a lawsuit filed against him by JPMorgan from two cases against the bank, which alleged the Wall Street giant knowingly benefited from Epstein’s sex trafficking.

Scotiabank (TSX:BNS) has announced the appointment of Francisco Aristeguieta as the company’s new group head, international banking, effective May 1, 2023.

The big Canadian bank said Aristeguieta will replace Ignacio “Nacho” Deschamps, who is retiring from the bank at the end of April after about seven years as international banking head.
