Internet domain specialist Minds + Machines Group (LON:MMX) has added the .boston address to its portfolio.
M+M is taking a 99% stake in Boston TLD management, which took on the rights and operation of the name from Boston Globe Media Partners.
The launch of .boston as an internet address is planned for later this year following receipt of required documentation for the acquisition by ICANN, the domain name overseer.
Antony Van Couvering, M+M’s chief executive, said it was part of the company’s strategy to become the owner/operator of choice for cities and municipalities on geo TLDs (i.e. geographic-associated addresses).
"We look forward to working with BTM, Boston Globe Media, the City of Boston and our distribution partners to ensure the successful launch of .boston later this year, which we believe will become a major digital asset to the City of Boston, its businesses and communities."
Details of the launch schedule will be announced post-completion of the relevant ICANN approvals, he added.
M+M will also be the registry provider for .boston, it already provides a similar service for the .london address.
