ICANN has recently announced plans to expand the universe of top level domains. TLDH intends to make targeted investments in this space, focusing on both infrastructure technologies and specific top level domains.
Minds + Machines
Minds + Machines, a wholly owned subsidiary of TLDH, is a full-service consulting and registry services company that provides a complete registry solution for new TLD applicants. Minds + Machines will be providing registry services for gTLDs applied for by TLDH and on behalf of clients, governments, and TLDH joint ventures:
FRED KRUEGER, CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER, EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN
Mr. Krueger is a serial entrepreneur who has started a variety of successful software and Internet companies.
Mr. Krueger began his career as a proprietary fixed income trader at Salomon Brothers and Grenwich Capital from 1986 to 1992. He left finance in 1992 to start a graphic design software company, Fauve Software, which was acquired by Macromedia (Nasdaq: ADBE) in 1995. Following this, he started Random Noise, a Java tools provider, which was sold to Vignette (Nasdaq: VIGN) in 1997.
In 1999, Mr. Krueger turned to the Internet sector, and started iwin.com, one of the 50 largest internet sites at the time. The company was merged with Uproar Inc. and sold to Vivendi Universal. He also started Traffic Marketplace, a top five advertisement network; the company was also sold to Vivendi Universal. Mr. Krueger subsequently founded TagWorld, a social network that was acquired by Viacom, and Adconion, an internet advertisement network based in Munich, Germany that serves over 6 billion ad impressions a month. Fred serves on the board of Adconion.
Mr. Krueger received a BA in Mathematics from Cornell University and a PhD in Operations Research from Stanford University.
ANTONY VAN COUVERING, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, DIRECTOR
Antony Van Couvering has been working with domain names and Internet infrastructure since 1996. He has played a substantial role in Internet governance issues and acted as a consultant on domain name issues to many of the world’s top companies.
Mr. Van Couvering has founded and run several companies, beginning with NetNames USA, the first firm to handle the domain name needs of larger companies, which he sold in 1999 to Group NBT (AIM: NBT) after helping launch several country-code top-level domains and assisting many others. In 2000, he founded NameEngine, began working with many of America’s top companies and intellectual property law firms, and pioneered the corporate domain name services model still in use today. He sold NameEngine to VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) in 2001, and helped VeriSign with strategy, marketing and software design until 2004. Until recently, he operated [email protected], an Internet consultancy.
Mr. Van Couvering founded Minds + Machines in 2009 to provide a low-cost, full-service alternative to existing registry options. Originally from Los Angeles, Mr. Van Couvering grew up in England and Kenya. He has a B.A. from Columbia in Comparative Literature and lives in Los Angeles.
MICHAEL SALAZAR, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, DIRECTOR
Michael Salazar was the Program Director at ICANN for the new gTLD application process where he was responsible for implementing and managing the gTLD programme. Michael was responsible for developing a new department within ICANN to implement the gTLD programme and manage the execution of all the operational activities necessary for the gTLD programme to function successfully.
Prior to ICANN Michael worked at KPMG for 16 years. During his time at KPMG he was a partner in the Advisory Services Group, responsible for the overall quality and execution of internal audit and advisory engagements for a diverse group of clients across a number of industries including technology, media and entertainment, consumer products and manufacturing. He co-managed KPMG’s IT Advisory Services group within Los Angeles and Orange County. Prior to working in the Advisory Services Group Michael spent considerable time working in KPMG’s International Tax practice.
CASPAR VON VELTHEIM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Caspar von Veltheim has been responsible for TLDH’s continental European applications in respect of .NRW and .BAYERN and is CEO of Minds + Machines GmbH, which is applying for .NRW with the support of the North-Rhine Westphalia government, and also of Bayern Connect GmbH, which is applying for the .BAYERN top-level domain with the support of the Free State of Bavaria.
KEITH TEARE, NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DESIGNATE
Keith Teare is the CEO and founder of just.me Inc and a founder at the Palo Alto incubator, Archimedes Labs. Keith has been the founder of a number of successful internet ventures: in 1994 he was CTO and co-founder of The EasyNet Group, one of the first ISP’s in Europe, which was admitted to AIM in 1996 and was subsequently acquired by BSkyB. He was also founder and CEO in 1998 of Palo Alto-based RealNames Corporation, which was responsible for supporting the nascent multi-lingual DNS system run by Verisign, and more recently was co-founder of TechCrunch, which was acquired by AOL in September 2010.
Elliot Noss, Non-Executive Director
Elliot is the Chief Executive Officer of Tucows Inc., having joined the company as Vice President of Corporate Services in 1997. Tucows is a leading domain name registrar and provider of other Internet services and also provides mobile phone services. Tucows has been at the forefront of new gTLDs since 1998 and has partnered with the Minds + Machines Group for the gTLD applications for .store, .tech and .group as well supporting the Group with its registrar platform. Elliot has been involved with ICANN since prior to its inception and was a member of its Nominating Committee three times.
