Retail

Marks & Spencer, AB Foods and Persimmon top next week's agenda

Major updates expected among retail, housebuilders and US inflation

Inflation again hangs over the coming week like an unmoving black cloud with the next update on prices in the US to dominate the mood at the end.

Companies, too, will have plenty to say on rising raw materials costs, staff wages, the impact of the weak pound and the spending mood among customers generally (read the full preview on inflation here).

Monday 7 November

Monday, though, should kick off well enough with the ever-ebullient Michael O'Leary likely to be in good heart if some of the recent bullish updates from rival airlines are an indication of how things have been going at Ryanair.

Consolidation is also becoming a watchword in the sector and whether O'Leary sees any value in buying rivals will be worth listening out for (for the complete Ryanair preview click here).

Tuesday 8 November

Associated British Foods will be unlikely to be as upbeat. It is in the teeth of the inflation storm at both Primark and its food-related businesses.

Clive Black at Shore Capital expects of profits of £1.35bn but advises investors to look through the current inflation storm to the longer-term potential for ABF.

Persimmon kicks off a week of hopeful reassurance from the housebuilders in the face of rising mortgage rates and predictions of a major house price correction on the way.

In the US, meanwhile, it's meme stock day as cinema chain AMC (full preview) updates while streaming numbers will be the focus at Disney (read the Disney preview in full).

Wednesday 9 November

Marks & Spencer also releases interim numbers and inflation and the cost-of-living squeeze will be to the fore.

Shore Capital expects market share gains in food and clothing and household, with like-for-like sales growth of 6.0% and 10.0% respectively.

The forecast for underlying profits is £199mln (for the complete Marks and Spencer preview click here).

Thursday 10 November

It's a big day for GSK spin-out Haleon. An overhang from the combined 45% stake owned by former parents GSK and Pfizer could start to come into play.

When Haleon was spun out as a separately listed company earlier this year, Pfizer held a 32% stake and GSK around 13.5%.

They are prevented from selling under a lockup agreement that will be lifted whenever Haleon publishes third-quarter results or 10 November, whichever happens first (though they happen to be on the same day). The Haleon preview in full can be read here.

US inflation numbers are due today and will be watched for any sign that some of the pressure might be easing and the Fed can take its foot off the monetary tightening brake (full preview here).

Friday 11 November

Insurer Beazley brings the company week to a close. Brokers see losses of US$125mln, while French weather events seen at the tail end of the second quarter are likely to produce a loss of US$20mln.

UK GDP numbers meanwhile are predicted to see a further slowing of the economy with shrinkage of between 0.1% and 0.5% predicted (read the full preview now).
