S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) has retreated 0.31% to 7,037 by about 12.52 pm despite Wall Street lifting to record highs overnight.
The Dow Jones in the US crossed 34,000 points for the first time and the S&P 500 also closed at record highs.
Locally, financial and energy sectors fell heavily while gold miners were among the bigger gainers on the back of a rise in the precious metal overnight.
Newcrest Mining (ASX:NCM) rose 3.4%, Northern Star (ASX:NST) gained 3% and Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) added 3.8%.
It is worth noting that despite today’s fall, the ASX 200 is still on track for its fourth weekly advance in a row, currently up 0.7% for the week.
