S&P/ASX 200 jumps 1.95% as investors await RBA’s interest rate decision

Gold prices rose 0.8% to US$1,893.13 per ounce on Monday on uncertainty surrounding the outcome of Tuesday’s US presidential election.

S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) surged 1.95% to 6067 by around 1.05 pm as the markets await a cut to the cash rate by the RBA this afternoon at 2:30 pm AEDT.

The energy sector is the standout with a gain of 5.07% after oil prices lifted 3% overnight while the information technology sector is up 2.77%.

Travel stocks rise

Travel stocks have gained thanks to the low number of new COVID-19 cases in Australia.

Webjet (ASX:WEB) jumped 7.49%, Sydney Airport (ASX:SYD) is up 2.3% and Qantas (ASX:QAN) is 3% higher.

Sandfire Resources Ltd (ASX:SFR) shares are down 6.31% after releasing a note to the market addressing media reports that China may be considering a ban on imports of copper ore and concentrate from Australia.

The company said it isn’t aware of the reasons for the reported potential ban or the reliability of media reports.
