Advanced Material Development joins QinetiQ's weapons sector research programme

Qinetiq won a £300mln Weapons Sector Research Framework contract last month from the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory

Advanced Material Development (AMD) has been picked by major UK and US defence contractor QinetiQ (LON:QQ.) to join a major weapons research programme.

FTSE 250-listed Qinetiq won a £300mln Weapons Sector Research Framework (WSRF) contract last month from the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

Nanotechnology specialist AMD said the framework programme involved over 100 leading industrial and academic suppliers, all focused on developing exploitable technologies for the UK Armed Forces.

John Lee, AMD’s chief executive officer, said: “This is a highly significant development for AMD in acknowledging both the important role materials science has to play and more specifically, the core need for nanomaterials development, in new defence-sector technologies.

“AMD is delighted to be welcomed into such esteemed company and we look forward to making a fundamental contribution to this vital programme, combining our R&D expertise with highly experienced companies in this sector.”

AMD, which works in close collaboration with the universities of Sussex, Surrey and Texas at Austin in the field of nanotechnology, has previously announced work with several multinational companies and government defence agencies, with work including the field of “stealth management” with the Ministry of Defence and the US military.
