Angling Direct PLC (LON:ANG) has announced the opening of its latest retail store and revealed details of what it described as a record breaking trading performance for ‘Black Friday’.

The leisure retailer said that sales for the week of Black Friday amounted to £1.86mln, up 11.3% on last year, and, that in this busy pre-Christmas sales period it served some 5,868 customers.

Specific Black Friday transactions increased by 28.9%, it added, while profit for the promotional period was up 49.5% from the comparative time in the previous year. It noted that the strong profit growth was driven by selective discounting and that core product ranges had a maximum discount of 10%.

Angling Direct noted that it continues to trade in line with market expectations, and, management is confident it will continue to deliver growth through the second half of the company’s financial year.

"We are delighted to report that trading remains strong, which is due to recent store openings, enhanced operational performances both in-store and online, and our targeted approach towards Black Friday, which resulted in a record performance," said Darren Bailey, Angling Direct's chief executive in a statement.

New store in Barnsley

On Saturday 7 December the company opened the new store in Barsnley, bringing its portfolio to 33 stores.

The store was formerly a fishing tackle outlet and it has been completely renovated for Angling Direct. It is creating four full-time and one part-time jobs.

The company said the store is ideally situated in a hugely popular fishing area.

Bailey added: “We are excited to have opened our latest store in Barnsley, which supports the recent opening of the Rotherham store.

“The new store offers products for all disciplines across this very enthusiastic angling community. As we seek to cater for all anglers across the UK with a new and modern retail offering, we are continuing to strategically expand our store footprint, as well as enhance our online offering in terms of products, experience and education in order to help raise the profile of angling,” he concluded.
