Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd’s (ASX:COB) minerals processing technology for cobalt extraction will be put to further work in a co-operation agreement covering the Millennium project of Global Energy Metals Corporation (CVE:GEMC).

The test work co-operation agreement will test the applicability of the technology to cobalt-pyrite concentrate from the North Queensland project, which was recently acquired by GEMC.

COB has been developing minerals processing technology for extraction and recovery of cobalt and elemental sulphur from cobalt-pyrite feedstocks.

The primary purpose of this technology was to test feedstock from COB’s Broken Hill Cobalt Project in far west NSW.

This process proved that the technology was technically and economically viable for that project.

The technology is focused on the treatment of pyrite, to recover payable metals, elemental sulphur, and generate environmentally stable iron oxide leach residues.

It specifically avoids the simultaneous production of sulphuric acid, which normally occurs when roasting pyrite, or leaching pyrite via pressure oxidation.

Subsequently, COB has successfully evaluated application of the technology to cobalt-pyrite feedstocks from Havilah Resources Ltd’s (ASX:HAV) Mutooroo deposit, also near Broken Hill.

The technology is also being used to evaluate tailings from CuDeco Limited’s (ASX:CDU) Rocklands project in north Queensland.

As COB assesses opportunities to apply the innovative processing technology a second prospective project, Millennium, has been identified in Queensland’s Mt Isa-Cloncurry region.

Recent acquisition

GEMC recently completed acquiring the Millennium project, as well as the Mt Dorothy Cobalt Project and Cobalt Ridge Project, which position it as an exploration leader in the region for cobalt deposits.

Millennium, which contains cobalt, copper and gold, is about 20 kilometres from the CuDeco Rocklands mine site.

Historical studies have shown that cobalt-pyrite concentrates can be floated from samples of drill core from Millennium.

COB and GEMC intend to prepare new cobalt-pyrite concentrate samples, and then test the applicability of COB’s pyrite processing technology to the concentrates.
