Apple unveils first foldable iPhone at first Ternus keynote

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL, XETRA:APC) debuted its first foldable iPhone on Wednesday, marking the biggest redesign of its smartphone lineup and opening a new revenue avenue for the company.

Newly appointed CEO John Ternus hosted his first product keynote.

Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1, presented the lineup at Apple's annual fall event at the company's Cupertino, California headquarters.

The device, called the iPhone Duo, starts at $1,999 and features a passport-like design that opens and closes like a book.

The device features a 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display, the largest ever on an iPhone, with a titanium frame, IP68 water resistance, and a custom hinge with magnets designed to keep it closed and the screen flat when opened. It also includes a nanotexture display meant to reduce visible crease, a two-camera system, Touch ID in the side button, Apple Pencil support, and side-by-side app functionality with new layouts for apps like Slack, Zoom and Netflix.

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple's new A20 Pro chip, which combined with a new cooling system gives the foldable 35% higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, according to the company. Preorders for the iPhone Duo open October 16, with sales beginning October 23.

Apple also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, priced at $1,199 with a 6.3-inch display, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, priced at $1,299 with a 6.9-inch display, both powered by the new A20 Pro chip, a 2-nanometer processor delivering up to 40% higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The Pro offers up to 36 hours of battery life and the Pro Max up to 45 hours, the longest ever on an iPhone, with faster wired charging adding up to six hours of video playback in five minutes.

The phones come in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Preorders begin September 12, with availability starting September 18.

Apple also unveiled AirPods 5, starting at $129 with Active Noise Cancellation and a $149 model adding volume swipe controls and wireless charging, along with features like Live Translation, Siri AI and IP57 water resistance. On the wearables side, the company expanded its health push with the Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4 and a redesigned Health app featuring a new Readiness score, Health Age metric, on-demand fitness assessments and AI-generated health insights, alongside U.S. Quest lab testing priced at $119.
