Orthocell Ltd (ASX:OCC, OTC:ORHHF) has moved beyond market access and into active clinical use within the US military and veteran healthcare system, completing the first surgical case using its Remplir nerve repair product in a Department of Defense facility shortly after securing network-wide approval.
The procedure was performed at a military base hospital in Ohio and follows the company’s April 15, 2026, announcement that Remplir had been approved for use across the combined Department of Defence and Department of Veterans Affairs hospital network. That approval opened access to about 221 hospitals, including 51 military hospitals and 170 VA medical centres nationwide.
While the earlier approval marked an important procurement and access milestone, the first completed case is more significant from a commercial standpoint because it shows the product is now being used in a real surgical setting.
For Orthocell, that shift from approval to actual use is a key step in converting US access into revenue.
From approval to adoption
The speed of the first case also points to early engagement from surgeons across the DoD and VA systems, which treat a large number of complex trauma and nerve injury patients. Early uptake in those settings is an encouraging sign for Orthocell, suggesting Remplir is gaining traction in an environment where clinicians often deal with challenging reconstructive procedures.
Orthocell's existing US distribution footprint, spanning 17 states, helped support the initial rollout and will be used to drive further uptake across the military and veterans’ health network. Those distributors are expected to assist with onboarding hospitals and providing in-theatre support as more surgeons begin using the product.
Managing director Paul Anderson said the milestone validated the company’s commercial strategy, surgeon engagement and distribution capability, while also highlighting the clinical relevance of Remplir for complex nerve injuries.
“We are extremely pleased to see Remplir progress to its first surgical case within the US DoD and VA hospital network so soon after approval, validating our commercial strategy, surgeon engagement, and distribution capability," Anderson said.
"This milestone highlights both the clinical relevance of Remplir for complex nerve injuries and our ability to execute rapidly once access is secured. Military and veteran healthcare systems manage some of the most challenging trauma cases, and early surgical uptake is an encouraging signal as we continue to expand activity across these hospitals.”
The first case strengthens Orthocell’s broader US commercialisation strategy.
Remplir has already gained clearance in the US and recorded initial sales. This latest milestone adds momentum to the company’s push to expand across both the DoD/VA network and the wider American hospital system.
