Far East Gold secures key regulatory milestone at Idenburg, clearing path to mine permitting

Far East Gold Ltd (ASX:FEG) has cleared a critical regulatory hurdle at its flagship Idenburg Gold Project in Papua, Indonesia, securing approval under the government’s forestry reclassification system over roughly 9,000 hectares of the project area — a decision that effectively unlocks the pathway to full environmental permitting, mining approvals and future development.

PIPPIB (Peta Indikatif Penghentian Pemberian Izin Baru) is an Indonesian forestry reclassification that determines whether land is allowed to progress towards mining-related approvals. The approval shifts the designated area from protected forest status into ‘Production Forestry’, making it eligible for the environmental permitting and mine-licensing pathway. Without PIPPIB, exploration projects in Indonesia cannot transition towards development.

The company can now move directly into the AMDAL environmental approvals process and subsequently apply for an operational mining licence (IUP OP).

A milestone that de-risks the project

Far East Gold says the approval provides tenure certainty across the core project development corridor and materially de-risks its permitting pathway. The company highlighted a number of immediate benefits, including:

  • Regulatory certainty over key zones for infrastructure and proposed mine development.
  • Ability to advance AMDAL permitting and mining approvals, a sequence required under Indonesian law.
  • Improved development optionality for infrastructure planning and future operations.

“Securing the PIPPIB approval over 9,000 hectares of our Idenburg Project is a pivotal moment for Far East Gold and the Idenburg flagship project,” managing director and CEO Shane Menere said.

“It removes a key regulatory barrier and allows us to move decisively into project development,” he added. “This outcome further strengthens our position in one of the most prospective gold provinces globally and mirrors the successful pathway we followed at our Woyla Project.”

Resource base and drilling progress

Idenburg already hosts a JORC Inferred Resource of 540,000 ounces of gold at 4.1 g/t and 468,000 ounces of silver at 3.6 g/t, and is located along the same mining corridor as several of Indonesia’s best-known projects:

  • Grasberg (+70 million ounces gold)
  • Porgera (+20 million ounces gold)
  • Frieda River (20 million ounces gold)
  • Ok Tedi (20 million ounces gold)

The project’s scale also stands out. Idenburg spans 95,280 hectares under a sixth-generation Contract of Work (CoW) — a sophisticated long-term tenure framework that adds an additional measure of development security.

Drilling activity is already under way, with a planned 32-hole, 3,670-metre program targeting extensions of existing high-grade zones. The company has been active across its broader Indonesian and Australian portfolio in recent months, initiating drilling at the high-grade Sua prospect, securing land access approvals at Mount Clark West, and uncovering new high-grade vein zones at its North Bermol prospect.

Infrastructure advantages

A logistical edge also plays into the latest development: Idenburg has direct access to the Trans-Papuan Highway, a strategic transport corridor that simplifies mobilisation of personnel and equipment — a rare feature for projects at this stage in Papua.

What’s next

With the PIPPIB approval now locked in, Far East Gold will shift focus to AMDAL permitting and advancing feasibility-level work. For investors, the milestone signals that Idenburg is moving out of an early exploration profile and into a formal development trajectory.

Far East Gold says the project’s scale, grade, permitting momentum and proximity to world-class deposits together present a “clear pathway to value creation”.
