U.S. index-futures decline ahead of data; Best Buy, Salesforce rally

U.S. stock-index futures fell today ahead of a stream of economic data including weekly jobless claims, manufacturing and housing. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2 percent to 18,227, while those for the S&P 500 index

U.S. stock-index futures fell today ahead of a stream of economic data including weekly jobless claims, manufacturing and housing.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2 percent to 18,227, while those for the S&P 500 index dropped 0.2 percent to 2,118.50. Futures for the Nasdaq 100 index lost 0.3 percent to 4,491.25.

DATA/FED SPEAKERS:

Weekly jobless claims and the Chicago Fed national activity index are due at 8:30 a.m.

Economists polled by MarketWatch expect 269,000 Americans to have filed for unemployment benefits last week, up slightly from 264,000 the week before.

The Markit flash manufacturing PMI for May is due at 9:45 a.m.

Existing home sales for April, the Philadelphia Fed sentiment survey for May and leading indicators for April are due at 10 a.m.

Fed Vice Chair Stanley Fisher will deliver a speech on challenges to the euro-area economy at a conference in Portugal at 1:30 p.m.

MOVERS:

Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) soared 10.3 percent in premarket trade after the consumer electronics retailer reported fiscal first-quarter profit and sales that beat expectations.

Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) jumped 5.1 percent in premarket action after the cloud-computing company reported adjusted earnings of $0.16 per share compare with the analyst consensus of $0.14 per share.

Transocean (NYSE:RIG) gained 2 percent after reaching a settlement from BP Plc on issues related to the 2010 disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP) tumbled 12 percent ahead of the bell after earnings from the storage and data-management company fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), a wireless technology provider, rose 1.6 percent after saying has entered accelerated share buyback agreements with two financial institutions for $5 billion of its common stock.

CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) gained 1 percent in premarket trades after the pharmacy chain agreed to buy pharmacy-benefits provider Omnicare in a deal valued at $12.7 billion.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), Intuit (NASDAQ:INTU) and Gap (NYSE:GPS) are scheduled to report results after the bell.

COMMODITIES:

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for delivery in July traded at $59.15 a barrel, up $0.17 in the Globex electronic session. July Brent crude on London’s ICE Futures exchange rose $0.19 to $65.22 a barrel.

Gold steadied today as the dollar fell. Spot gold was unchanged on the day at $1,208.46 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures for June delivery were up 0.1 percent at $1,209.50 an ounce.

OTHER MARKETS:
