News that Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX’s valuation has shot up to $350 million – making it potentially the most valuable unlisted company in the world – has had a positive knock-on effect for FTSE 100-listed vehicle Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SMT).
SpaceX’s heightened valuation follows a tender offer allowing up to $1.25 billion in insider shares to be sold, according to a recent Bloomberg article.
The reported transaction priced the rocket company's unlisted shares at $185 each, a significant increase from the $112 valuation set earlier this year.
This development, if confirmed, provides an approximately 2% net asset value uplift to Scottish Mortgage, as SpaceX is one of its largest investments.
That is according to analysts at investment bank Stifel, who surmised an approximate NAV of 1,103p per Scottish Mortgage share.
With ScotMort’s shares currently swapping for 981p, there is an implied 12.4% discount to NAV on the company’s stock.
