Games Workshop Group PLC (LSE:GAW) has formally announced that it has granted Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) exclusive rights to adapt the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property into film and television content.
Discussions between the two companies first emerged in 2022 before an initial deal was signed in December 2023.
Earlier this year, Games Workshop said the deal would only progress if creative guidelines were “mutually agreed”.
In a statement released this morning, Games Workshop said it has “now agreed creative guidelines and reached a final agreement”.
“Under the terms of the agreement, Games Workshop has granted exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of any initial Warhammer 40,000 production.”
Warhammer is a tabletop miniature wargame created by Games Workshop, set 40,000 years in the future when the galaxy is consumed by war between Space Marines and various alien races.
Its popularity has been a boon for Games Workshop and has helped propel the British company into the FTSE 100.
Superman actor and Warhammer superfan Henry Cavill has long been linked to the Warhammer adaptation, although it is unclear to what extent, if any, he will be involved in the project.
Warhammer is not expected to hit screens for a number of years.
