Ryanair cancels flights as Boeing underdelivers

Just 14 of an expected 27 aircraft will arrive over the coming months, Ryanair said

Ryanair Holdings PLC (LSE:RYA) has announced further cuts to its winter schedule due to delayed deliveries of several new aircraft from The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA).

Just 14 of an expected 27 aircraft will arrive over the coming months, Ryanair said in a statement, as manufacturer Boeing and its own supplier Spirit AreoSystems face production delays.

“It is deeply regrettable that production problems in Wichita, and in Seattle, have yet again delayed Boeing’s contracted deliveries to Ryanair this winter,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said.

Flights will be cancelled from October, he added, while Ryanair continues “working closely” with Boeing to secure delivery of all 57 737 jets by late May.

Fewer aircraft will be based at Charleroi, Dublin, Bergamo, Naples, Pisa, Porto, Cologne and East Midlands Airport to make up for the shortfall.

Though the full extent of the cancellations remains unclear, O’Leary added customers would be told over the coming days.

Boeing has repeatedly warned of delays to deliveries of its aircraft this year, with a parts issue at Spirit having already affected production.

Ryanair reassured it was still on course to reach its traffic target of 183.5 million passengers meanwhile, but warned any further delays from Boeing could weigh in.

Ryanair shares fell by 2.6% to €15.52.
