Week ahead: Sainsbury's, Persimmon, Currys and AO World

The coming week brings a new month of July, or the start of H2 for lovers of business lingo, with investors looking out for updates from Sainsbury's, Currys and AO World in the retail sector, along with Persimmon among other FTSE 100 names.

There should also be ample amounts of market-moving macroeconomic data, rising to a crescendo at the end of the week with the US non-farm payrolls.

MONDAY 3 JULY

It’s a new month so as usual the first week brings new economic data, starting on Monday with manufacturing sector updates for the UK and other major economies.

‘Flash’ PMI releases earlier this month showed the UK economy losing momentum, with the manufacturing PMI falling more than expected.

Manufacturing output charges declined fractionally, while total input cost inflation were the softest since February 2021, though prices charged inflation eased only slightly.

TUESDAY 4 JULY

When Sainsbury's updates the market on Tuesday it will continue to do so in the eye of the storm around alleged profiteering and sky-high food inflation.

Amid worries about the fate of Thames Water and calls for re-nationalisation, several water industry chiefs will be facing a parliamentary grilling on Tuesday.

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators committee will continue its follow-up inquiry on the industry, taking evidence from the chief exec and chair of regulator Ofwat, from 4pm, following evidence executive from United Utilities and Wessex Water on potential solutions to reduce water pollution.

WEDNESDAY 5 JULY

AO World PLC (LSE:AO.) (AO World PLC (LSE:AO.)) shares saw some profit-taking ahead of full-year results on Wednesday, though that is not too much of a surprise after a 40%-plus bounce since the start of the year.

Cost cutting has been a theme at the online white good retailer, also the large stake recently taken by Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group.

There’s also some potentially important data in the form of the purchasing managers index (PMI) survey for the services sector, including what revelations there are about inflation and jobs.

THURSDAY 6 JULY

Housebuilder Persimmon PLC (LSE:PSN) releases its first-half trading update on Thursday (6 July) with plenty of nervousness surrounding the sector.

The FTSE 100-listed shares have halved in a year, reflecting worries about the upward turn in interest rates, an end to government support schemes, a dividend cut and expectations of lower profits.

Analysts said an update on recent trading and guidance about the coming half-year will be the important items for investors to watch.

Elsewhere, Currys PLC (LSE:CURY) results are due with management hoping that it’s third time lucky after two upgrades this year have failed to stop the shares’ long-term decline.

Last month, the NFP showed a very strong rise in jobs numbers of 339,000 and economists expect another strong month.

Wage growth will also be in focus.
