With housebuilders on a sticky wicket at present, amid rising interest rates, demand slowing and inflation putting pressure on costs, a Bellway PLC (LSE:BWY) update could be interesting.
With a recent update from a sector peer showing sales slowing again as rising mortgage rates put off potential buyers, shares in the FTSE 250 company have been on the slide.
Up on the FTSE 100, Ashtead Group PLC (LSE:AHT) numbers will almost be a touchstone for the health of the US economy as around 85% of its sales and 90% of its profits come from its Sunbelt operation that is based there.
While worries about a US recession will be the focus when it reports, the plant hire group’s guidance has consistently pointed to rising sales growth and earnings.
Most recently, Ashtead said a sales growth target of 18% to 21% for the year just ended would be beaten.
Elsewhere, UK jobs numbers could shift a change in the mood around the next interest rate move and hence also the pound and the FTSE 100, while US inflation numbers later in the day could make big headlines and lead to considerable market volatility.
If US core consumer price inflation comes in above the 0.4% consensus forecast, then ING says “the odds would likely swing in favour of a hike on Wednesday, as the measure would be heading in completely the wrong direction”.
