Sainsbury’s and Ocado prices jump in May

J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) and Ocado Group PLC (LSE:OCDO) both increased prices of everyday groceries in May, research from Which? found.

Sainsbury’s upped the price of a typical basket of groceries by 28p between April and May, while the same items at Ocado jumped by 21p.

Falling prices at Tesco and Morrisons allowed for month-on-month falls of 53p and £2.37 respectively, the consumer choice group found.

This increase at Sainsbury’s comes despite the group price matching Aldi on 150 products including milk, butter, vegetables, and bread.

At the start of June, the supermarket said it had slashed the prices of more than 40 products dairy products by as much as 60%.

However, all these retailers’ prices remain ahead of discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, which charge around £10 less for a basket of groceries.

At the end of May, Sainsbury’s boss Simon Roberts denied that his company had been profiteering or using inflation as an excuse to prop up prices.

The price increase comes even though world food prices dropped to a two-year low in May, according to the FAO world food price index.
