Aldi has again been named the UK's cheapest supermarket by the consumer group Which?
In May, the German-owned supermarket’s items were found to be £18 cheaper than Waitrose, the most expensive according to the consumer lobbyist.
A basket of 40 popular groceries cost £68.60 whereas the same items from Waitrose amounted to £86.91, the research found.
Just behind Aldi was fellow German retailer, Lidl, which charged £70.51 for the basket of groceries, almost £6 cheaper than third-place Asda.
Ele Clark, Which? retail editor said: “The Which? Food Inflation Tracker shows that the price of food and drink is continuing to soar, as people suffer through the worst cost of living crisis in decades.
“It’s no surprise to see many shoppers turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl.”
The research group has argued that many of the supermarkets are not doing enough to help the customer.
“Which? believes the big retailers have a responsibility to ensure everyone has easy access to basic, affordable food ranges at a store near them, and to provide transparent and comparable pricing so people can easily work out which products offer the best value,” Clark argued.
The group also researches the prices for a trolley of 131 items, which includes both branded and own-label products.
Both Lidl and Aldi are not included in this measure, allowing Asda to come in the cheapest at £332.40 – almost £32 less than Waitrose’s £363.99 trolley.
