Primark owner Associated British Foods is raising the rate of pay for its 26,000 retail assistants from next week.
Staff across England, Scotland and Wales will be paid £11 an hour, with this rising to £11.51 in London.
This would represent a 12% increase against the same time last year, according to the Evening Standard.
The increase comes into force from Saturday when the national living wage for all workers aged 23 and above is raised to £10.42 an hour.
Additionally, Primark said it will put all its retail assistants onto one rate of pay, removing current aged-related pay bands for workers under 23.
The minimum wage for employees between age bands under 23, which include 16 to 17, 18 to 20 and 21 to 22 is all lower than the national living wage for those 23 and above.
“We want all of our colleagues to continue to be competitively rewarded for their work and this pay increase reflects our commitment to continue to invest in our people and our stores as we continue to grow,” said Kari Rodgers, UK retail director at Primark.
Primark continues to carry most of the interest in ABF’s share price, outperforming its grocery, sugar, agriculture, and ingredients divisions.
Today’s announcement follows a trend in the retail space that has seen a host of the sector’s players hike wages in efforts to keep a hold of employees during the cost-of-living crisis.
Aldi, Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are just a few retailers to increase the wages of their staff over the last 12 months.
