Aldi has dished out another pay rise to all its store staff, its third since the start of last year.
Store assistants will be paid £11.40 per hour from 1 July and £12.85 for those working within the M25, while pay rates will rise to £12.30 and £13.15 in the capital based on the length of service.
The grocer, which overtook Morrisons as the UK’s fourth largest supermarket, said the rise for its 28,000 store staff will mean it has spent £100mln over the last 12 months to improve pay, which is currently 13% higher than this time last year.
The German discounter also said that the pay rates are higher than the Real Living Wage set by the Living Wage Foundation of £10.90 and £11.95 in London.
Aldi also claims to be the only supermarket to pay for breaks, worth an additional £927 annually to staff, according to a statement.
“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11.40 per hour to all Store Assistants,” said chief executive officer Giles Hurley.
Today’s announcement builds on the pay rise Aldi gave its warehouse workers in January, increasing their pay to £13.18, 20% higher than in January 2022.
