London’s broadband has been ranked number 76 for global download speeds, behind Bucharest, Santiago and Kraków.
According to data from the Speedtest Global Index, London has a download speed of 79.13mbps.
Beijing tops the list, with a download speed almost four times faster than London at 277.75mbps.
Abu Dhabi ranks in second with a 247.27mbps speed, with a second Chinese city in third, Shanghai, with speeds of 236.01mbps.
Bangkok, New York, Valparaíso, Madrid, Lyon, Geneva and Bucharest make up the rest of the top 10.
Fibre optic competition in the UK is relatively fierce, but slower speeds in the UK compared to international peers has been blamed on the slow rollout of full-fibre broadband across the country, even though it is gathering pace.
Independent full fibre alternative networks, known as altnets, passed 5.8mln premises at the end of 2022, according to data supplied by Point Topic, up by half a million in the last two months of the year.
By the end of 2022, over 130 local authorities had two or more independent full-fibre providers operating in their areas, while more than 1.3mln premises across the UK could choose between at least three independent full-fibre providers.
These numbers suggest that the momentum for altnets is showing no signs of slowing down, although Openreach, owned by BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A), is the largest network owner by a wide margin, supplying over around 8mln of the 14mln households using Fibre-to-the-premise broadband.
