A third-quarter update from J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) will be the first of the big four supermarkets to report after what appeared to be a solid Christmas, according to recent industry data.
Margins will be a big focus of this week's update from the grocer.
JD Sports Fashion PLC (LSE:JD.) will be another of the retailers in focus too, with investors anticipating good news, with the shares up 14% in the past week.
Analysts at Peel Hunt predicted the trends seen in the first half "probably broadly continued" in the second and that while the January update is likely to be "at least solid", the shares have been discounting bad news.
Elsewhere, Barratt Developments PLC (LSE:BDEV) will be the first of the blue-chip housebuilders to report and should set the tone for some of its peers which are updating the market later in the week, with a cloud hanging over the sector since updates in October flagged a big drop in the number of housing reservations.
Analysts and investors will be looking out for completed sales numbers, comments on house prices, cladding remediation costs and the troubled Croydon Cityscape project.
