Week ahead: Tesco, M&S, JD Sports, Sainsbury's, ASOS, Barratt, Persimmon and big US banks

The rush of retailers updating on their festive performance continues in the coming week, along with several housebuilders, recruiters and Wall Street banks.

Big names among them include Tesco, Marks & Spencer, JD Sports, Sainsbury's, ASOS, Barratt, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey.

US earnings season kicks off on Friday with the likes of JP Morgan, Citigroup, Bank of New York, Wells Fargo and investment colossus BlackRock.

For macroeconomics fans, the big news will be US inflation numbers on Thursday, while for the UK it's a GDP update on Friday, where there will be details on industrial and services sectors, along with trade data.

MONDAY 9 JANUARY

In typical fashion, Monday is quite quiet in the City diary, but the first housebuilder of the week sets up a potential foundation for the coming days.

While the wider sector has been battered by concerns about mortgage rates and consumer budgets, Ireland-based Cairn Homes plc (LSE:CRN) has been somewhat of an outlier in terms of share price, with its decline of 17% over the past year less than half most UK rivals.

Back in September, it pledged "significant shareholder returns" in the coming years after saying first-half profits more than tripled, following its best-ever sales performance.

The mid-cap housebuilder expects demand for its new homes to remain high into 2023, and reported a current closed and forward sales pipeline in excess of €760mln.

Significant announcements on Monday

Trading updates: Cairn Homes plc (LSE:CRN), Intermediate Capital Group (LSE:ICP) PLC

AGMs: Premier African Minerals Limited

Economic announcements: Consumer Credit (US)

TUESDAY 10 JANUARY

On Tuesday, the retail sector newsflow begins to dribble out again, following the updates from Next and B&M in the past week.

Alongside footwear specialist Shoe Zone PLC (AIM:SHOE), there will also be tabletop gaming chain Games Workshop PLC, which is more of a leisure play than a pure retailer.

Shares in GAW shares have soared 25% month to date following the inking of a major Warhammer rights deal with Amazon, though profits are expected to be flat for the half year despite higher revenues.

Significant announcements on Tuesday

Finals: Shoe Zone PLC (AIM:SHOE)

Interims: Games Workshop Group PLC (LSE:GAW)

Trading updates: RS Group PLC (LSE:RS1), Robert Walters

AGMs: Wishbone Gold PLC (AIM:WSBN, AQSE:WSBN)

Economic announcements: BRC Retail Sales (UK)

WEDNESDAY 11 JANUARY

A third quarter update from J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) on Wednesday will be the first of the big four to report after what appeared to be a solid Christmas, according to recent industry data.

Margins will be a big focus of this week's update from the grocer.

JD Sports Fashion will be another of the retailers in focus too, with investors anticipating good news, with the shares up 14% in the past week.

Analysts at Peel Hunt predicted the trends seen in the first half "probably broadly continued" in the second and that while the January update is likely to be "at least solid", the shares have been discounting bad news.

Elsewhere, Barratt Developments PLC (LSE:BDEV) will be the first of the blue-chip builders to report and set the tone, which has been pretty melancholy since its last update in October that flagged a big drop in the number of housing reservations.

Analysts and investors will be looking out for completed sales numbers, comments on house prices, cladding remediation costs and the troubled Croydon Cityscape project.

Significant announcements on Wednesday

Trading updates: Barratt Developments PLC (LSE:BDEV), Grafton Group PLC (ISE:GFTU), JD Sports Fashion PLC (LSE:JD.), PageGroup PLC (LSE:PAGE), Sainsbury PLC, Ten Entertainment Group PLC (LSE:TEG), Topps Tiles PLC (LSE:TPT), Vistry Group PLC (LSE:VTY)

Economic announcements: MBA Mortgage Applications (US), Crude Oil Inventories (US)

THURSDAY 12 JANUARY

Among those updating the market on Thursday will be several retailers, including Marks and Spencer Group PLC (LSE:MKS), DFS, Halfords and Tesco.

M&S last year saw its shares tumble back close to all-time lows though it was on the up since the autumn, with one analyst suggesting "a lot of the recent pessimism seems somewhat overdone".

Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO), on the other hand, has not endured anywhere near as much pain as its more upmarket rival.

And ahead of the trading statement, Goldman Sachs predicted the number-one supermarket group's shares could benefit in the new year after recent positive data seen in the UK sector.

Tesco provides “more upside” potential with its current valuation “compelling” - though some other analysts were less bullish.

ASOS PLC (LSE:ASC) will be with a trading statement for the four months ended 31 December, completing a year that saw the shares plunge over 70%.

Investors no doubt will be interested in how the online clothing retailer fared during the festive period, and whether it was able to provide some form of relief - though analysts have different levels of scepticism.

FRIDAY 13 JANUARY

Friday will see the US earnings season begin in earnest with reports from Wall Street giants including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Citigroup.

Analysts expect US banks to show another quarter of negative earnings growth before returning to earnings growth in the current quarter.
