Waymo is now carrying an average of 500,000 paid robotaxi rides every week, as the Alphabet-owned self-driving company expands rapidly across the US.

It runs about 4,000 robotaxis across 15 US cities, up from just three cities two years ago.

Most of those launches have come in the past year.

Around 80% of the fleet is concentrated in California and Texas, and Texas is where the growth is fastest.

Waymo's fleet in the state has jumped 49% in three weeks to 1,102 vehicles, up from just over 700 at the end of August.

It now operates in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

About a third of the Texas fleet is made up of the Ojai, a modified minivan built by Zeekr, a brand owned by China's Geely, which also owns Volvo.

The vehicles arrive in the US without Chinese connected-car technology and are fitted with Waymo's sixth-generation driving system at its factory in Arizona.

The Ojai is meant to cut costs and bring Waymo closer to profitability.

For now, steep US tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles are eating into those savings.

Waymo appears willing to swallow the extra cost, with research firm MoffettNathanson estimating it is on track to import 5,100 Ojais by the end of the year.

The remaining 800 or so robotaxis outside California and Texas are spread across states including Arizona and Florida.

Florida and newer markets such as Las Vegas are likely to be next in line for the incoming minivans.
