Diageo, the FTSE 100 drinks giant behind Johnnie Walker and Guinness, has appointed Joanne Wilson as its new chief financial officer.

Wilson joins from the advertising group WPP, where she holds the same role, and will take up the post at some point in 2027.

She replaces Nik Jhangiani, who arrived from Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in September 2024 and served as interim chief executive between July and December last year.

Before WPP, Wilson held senior finance and commercial roles at the soft drinks maker Britvic, the customer data firm dunnhumby, Tesco and KPMG, where she trained as a chartered accountant.

She is also a non-executive director of the events and publishing group Informa.

Chief executive Sir Dave Lewis said Wilson would help accelerate the turnaround of Diageo, having led transformations at her previous employers.

Jhangiani will stay on to ensure a smooth handover, having recently set out a three-year financial plan focused on cutting debt and strengthening the balance sheet.

Wilson will receive a base salary of £900,000, plus bonus and long-term share awards, and compensation for incentives forfeited by leaving WPP.

The change comes as Diageo works to revive growth under Lewis, who took the helm following a period of weaker sales and a share price slide.
