BHP Billiton and Vale granted more time to settle Samarco disaster claim

Federal and State Prosecutors are chasing the mining giants for US$54bn

BHP Billiton plc (LON:BLT) and partner Vale have been granted an additional 150 days to reach a settlement over the Samarco dam disaster in Brazil.

Nineteen people died and nearby towns were flooded after a tailings dam at the mine burst in November 2015.

Federal and State Prosecutors are chasing the mining giants for US$54bn in redress and compensation for the dam failure, which was Brazil’s worst ever environmental disaster.

Shares in BHP rose 0.5% to 1,367p.
