AfriTin's production ramp up on course

Attention switches to lithium and tantalum in the next phase of expansion

AfriTin PLC said production from the Uis mine in Namibia rose by 23% in its latest six months as phase 1 of a scheduled ramp-up continued on track.

Commissioning of new processing facilities is now complete, the miner said, with production expected to hit an annualised 1,200tpa by the end of the year.

Output in the six months to August was 454t of tin concentrate up from 368t in the same period in 2021.

Revenues, though, were lower, at £4.7mln (£5.1mln), which AfriTin attributed to a lower tin price and settling adjustments.

Interim losses were £3.7mln (£504,000) reflecting the work ongoing at Uis, it said.

The miner recently received an offer of finance for a significant expansion at Uis that will add lithium and tantalum to the product mix.

As part of that finance package, it raised US$22.8mln from an issue of new shares with a further US$30.8mln of debt funding awaiting final sign-off.

“From a macroeconomics perspective, we have also seen tin prices drop drastically in recent months, although the inverse has occurred with regard to lithium prices," said Anthony Viljoen, chief executive.

"This further cements the group's strategy to accelerate and unlock lithium and tantalum, as we continue to organically grow the operations and move into a lower unit cost position.”
