4D pharma PLC said results from a phase II evaluation of its key irritable bowel treatment LBP Blautix have appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific publication.
The article in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics took a deeper dive into the already revealed finding that the drug has an impact on the symptoms of the two separate IBS cohorts – those with constipation and those with diarrhoea.
"Irritable bowel syndrome remains a significant unmet medical need, with many patients failing to derive adequate relief from currently available symptomatic treatments and significant side effects associated with their modes of action,” said 4D’s chief scientific officer Alex Stevenson.
“Complemented by previous research by 4D pharma and others, these clinical results support the potential for Blautix, a single strain live biotherapeutic product, to address the underlying causes of this highly debilitating condition."
4D’s work focuses on the human microbiome, a bacterial ecosystem found mainly in the gut.
As well as a treatment for IBS, it is developing live biotherapeutic drug candidates that have the potential to also treat a whole range of diseases including cancer and asthma.
