Heinz Ketchup tops list as prices of big food brands rocket

Well-known brands of sauces, biscuits, bread, crisps, chips, butter and milk have all seen rises of more than 20%

Prices of some of the most popular brands on supermarket shelves have more than doubled over the past two years, according to new research from Which?

Well-known brands of sauces, biscuits, bread, crisps, chips, butter and milk have all seen rises of more than 20% since 2020, said the report.

Heinz Tomato Ketchup saw the biggest rise on average at 53% to 91p, though in one chain the price had risen by 70%, said the consumer organisation.

Dolmio Lasagne sauce was second on the list with a rise of 47% or 61p, but the price had more than doubled in some shops while one supermarket put the price of Twinings teabags up by 64% to 233p, though across all the outlets the average was 17%.

Which? compared the prices of 79 items across six major supermarket outlets, Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose between 21 September to 20 October 2020 and 2022.

Aldi and Lidl were not included in the survey due to the fewer number of the products on sale, though own brands items also recorded hefty rises noted Which?

ONS data recently revealed soaring prices of previously lower-price staples such as rice, pasta and potatoes.

Officially, grocery inflation is running at 14%, which economists estimate equates to £643 added on to an average household’s annual food spending.

Sue Davies, Which? head of food policy, said: "Our research shows the shocking rate of inflation on some of the nation's favourite branded foods, which is much higher than the national average, and highlights why it is so important for retailers to provide people with a choice of product ranges.

"Supermarkets must ensure budget lines for healthy and affordable essential items are widely available across their stores including smaller convenience stores.”
