BSF Enterprise PLC (LSE:BSFA) gained 52% to 8.36p in Tuesday's early deals after announcing its wholly owned subsidiary, 3D Bio-Tissues, successfully produced three prototypes of lab-grown meat.
The investment company said in a statement that three small meat fillets, roughly 30mm in height and 15mm in diameter (smaller than a 5p piece), weighing five grams, were produced by its subsidiary.
According to a statement, this is a major step forward toward 3D Bio-Tissues’ objective of producing the UK’s first full-scale cultivated meat fillet, which it expects to showcase in coming months.
One of the significant developments was that the lab-meats were not produced with plant-based scaffolds or fillers as used in the industry to ensure structural integrity, but using its patented animal-free cell booster, 'City mix', meaning the fillets are "100% meat".
“We believe our prototypes to be some of the first fillets of cultivated meat in the world, representing a ground-breaking development for the industry,” said chief executive Che Connon.
