Barclays PLC (LSE:BARC) said it will give mortgage holders up to £2,000 to make green improvements to their homes.
Its trial will reward customers who embark on larger projects such as installing heat pumps, solar panels or new insulation.
The initiative stems from the findings of a survey it commissioned which revealed that most homeowners want to make green improvements to their homes that improve energy efficiency.
However, most were only willing to commit to modest projects as the costs of larger undertakings were seen as prohibitive.
"There is a clear need to improve the energy efficiency of UK housing, but as our data indicate, cost remains a barrier to turning desire into action," said CS Venkatakrishnan, Barclays chief executive.
"We hope this pilot will go some way towards encouraging consumers to make energy efficiency-related home improvements."
The pilot initiative will be used to compile data on which a much broader project might be rolled out, the bank said.
