BP to explore hydrogen projects in Mauritania - COP27

BP to start exploring the potential for large-scale green hydrogen production in Mauritania

BP PLC (LSE:BP.) announced it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Mauritania on Tuesday, which will see it explore the potential for large-scale green hydrogen production in the country.

“We are already developing one of the world’s most innovative gas projects with the support of the Mauritanian government,” said BP’s Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath.

“We now intend to expand our partnership into low carbon energy by exploring the potential for a world-leading green hydrogen development, which could position Mauritania at the forefront of the energy transition.”

Tuesday’s deal, signed alongside the COP27 climate summit, builds on a longstanding partnership between the oil company and the West African nation, with an existing project between the two set to see 2.3mln tonnes of liquified natural gas produced yearly in the future.

BP highlighted that hydrogen is one of its “five energy transition growth engines,” with the company’s portfolio of such projects continuously growing as it aims to ultimately move away from oil and gas in the years to come.
