Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF) AS, a leader in wire-based, direct energy deposition (DED) 3D printing, or additive manufacturing for aerospace-grade structural titanium components, announced its expansion into the semiconductor manufacturing market.
As the raw material supplier to machining partner Hittech Group, Plattsburgh, New York-based Norsk Titanium is part of a supply chain that delivers a critical component to ASML, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of semiconductor chip-making equipment.
Norsk is using its patented Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) additive process to replace legacy forged titanium plates as the raw material for the manufacturing of an ASML carrier structure.
According to the company, its RPD process delivers a preform that “saves 140 kg of titanium for each carrier structure delivered.”
“Adoption of this additive process may save 45% in energy consumption and carbon emissions, while significantly reducing the amount of machining required, and decreasing the overall production schedule for the carrier tray,” said Norsk.
The carrier tray preform will be manufactured in Norsk’s advanced production facility in Plattsburgh, New York.
“This expansion into the semiconductor market represents a significant milestone for us,” Norsk Titanium CEO Michael Canario said in a statement. “This effort demonstrates our unique ability to slot into the existing supply chain for industrial manufacturing and to deliver value to customers in multiple markets.”
Canario noted that Norsk will expand in the semiconductor market, while "delivering sustainable cost-effective solutions."
Norsk Titanium, founded in 2007 in Norway, has pioneered its Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) additive manufacturing process and has been supplying flight qualified structural components since 2017. It operates manufacturing facilities in New York state and Norway. At present, it is the only Federal Aviation Administration-approved and original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-qualified company for structural titanium parts manufacturing. With its RPD process, Norsk can deliver metals of greater strength and durability on-demand with an improved environmental footprint.
