TikTok confirms its workers in China can see European user data

China-based TikTok workers are able to access data from UK and European users, amid concerns the information could be given to the Chinese government

TikTok Global has said some of its China-based workers are able to access data from UK and European users, following concerns that the Chinese government may get hold of such information.

In an update on its privacy policy, TikTok said it allows "certain employees within our corporate group”, including in China, “to access to TikTok European user data”.

Scrutiny towards TikTok has come from the likes of the UK and the US, with concerns being raised that its data could be given to the Chinese government.

US Federal Communications Commission official Brendan Carr previously called for a ban on the video-sharing app in America, suggesting that no one could be certain that its information is not finding its way to the Chinese Communist Party.

Meanwhile, the UK Parliament TikTok account was closed in August over the concerns.

There have also been allegations that plans were made by TikTok’s owner ByteDance to use the data collected from the app to track an American citizen, but TikTok has denied this.
