British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (LSE:IAG) has said it is buying dozens of new Boeing 737 Max short-haul aircraft.
Chief executive Luis Gallego said the aircraft will bring "long-term cost savings, lower carbon emissions as well as an improved customer experience".
Earlier this week it was confirmed that shareholders of British Airways and Iberia parent IAG approved the purchase of 50 of the Boeing aircraft.
The order includes several of the high-capacity Max 8200, which can carry up to 204 passengers, and the as yet uncertificated Max 10, which can theoretically carry up to 230.
Boeing also said it has an option to purchase a further hundred 737 Max aircraft.
Trade press said the high-density Max 8200 was designed with low-cost carriers in mind, with Ryanair already operating the largest Max fleet and using it for some of its most popular European routes.
