£7 pints could be new norm as industry suffers a “perfect storm”

The increase in pint prices could leave drinkers with light pockets, reckons Scottish brewer

Heading off for a pint might soon cost £7 a time, according to a Scottish brewer.

Alan Mahon, founder of Edinburgh-based Brewgooder, said a perfect storm of soaring prices of raw ingredients and energy plus a 3,000% carbon dioxide cost increase are to blame.

Mahon, who set up Brewgooder in 2016 told the BBC a pint may become a “luxury” for many.

Market research group CGA estimates the national pint price average as £3.95 but drinkers in London would see that as very low.

Jim Rowan, managing director of Dunn Food and Drink, said pubs so far have been able to pass on the cost increases

but fears tolerance will fade with the consistent rise in prices.

Still not as bad as £14 price tag predicted back in August.
