Burcon NutraScience Corp (TSX:BU, NASDAQ:BRCN) announced that it has received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a patent application covering the unique process of producing high-purity protein ingredients from non-soy oilseed, which includes the use of sunflower seed as the source material.
The developer of plant-based proteins for foods and beverages said US patent application 16/071,653, which covers the unique processes to produce protein isolates from canola, sunflower, hemp, safflower, cottonseed, flax, sesame, mustard and peanut or any oilseed product or by-product derived from the processing of non-soy oilseeds, was allowed on July 19, 2022, and will be soon issued as a US granted patent.
“We are pleased to receive this sunflower patent allowance, which further validates Burcon's innovative capabilities to develop leading edge next-generation protein technologies,” Burcon NutraScience interim CEO Peter Kappel said in a statement.

“We continue to strengthen our IP (intellectual property) portfolio but more importantly, we are developing unique processes to produce upcycled protein ingredients that offer a sustainable and economical way to feed the world,” Kappel added.
Burcon noted the patent allowance adds to the company's existing patent portfolio of 331 issued patents in various countries, including 72 issued US patents, and in excess of 175 additional pending patent applications, 26 of which are US patent applications.
A notice of allowance from the USPTO is a written notification that a patent application has cleared internal review and is pending issuance and will grant in the near future, according to the company.
