Ofgem is set to urge gas and electricity consumers to cut down on their usage just days after the government rejected calls to issue similar advice.
Worries that the National Grid might not be able to cope with a really cold snap have prompted ministers to state that the possibility of planned power cuts this winter was “extremely unlikely”.
Ofgem’s advice, however, is said to be targeted towards helping households reduce fuel bills due to the surge in the price of gas.
Jonathan Brearley, the regulator's chief executive, will announce the public information campaign on Thursday at an Energy UK conference.
Reducing energy consumption reduces bills and directly helps with the security of supply, contributes to decarbonisation, and saves money for the public finances, he will say in the speech, according to the FT.
Ofgem will also work with other organisations to implement the campaign, Brearley said.
